5 Questions With … Ben Irurzun

Today, I will be chatting with Ben Irurzun , asking him five questions. Ben's journey into interior design is such an interesting story. You might recognize Ben from BBC1's Interior Design Masters. With more exciting projects on the horizon. Ben recently visited Wolverhamptons School Of Art where we met, and I can confirm he’s as lovely off screen as he is on. Let’s chat to Ben…

1- How did you start your design career, what is your background ?

I started my education at a very early age self educating myself on history and Victoriana at age 4/5. I was obsessed with egiptology !

My professional career started in costume design. That I shared alongside working as a barista to be able to afford the rent.

They evolved into haute couture and vintage alterations, landing little jobs here and there in interior design projects.

And then getting a job in lingerie design which is what I had studied.

And finally interior design masters came along.

2- What inspires your designs ?

The past, it’s always been the past and will always be the past, specially the years in between 1830 and 1930.

I find that during the Victorian period we get the bases for what we call comfort and modern living

3 - In your career what has been your proudest moment ?

I think the day I landed my first costume gig. I really enjoyed working in a creative environment that meant working in the past and in period costume.

4- Is there a project you would really love to do ?

The dream would be to land my own tv space to show the world that theatre and whimsy have a space in modern times. To show everyone what extraordinary living is ❤️

5 - And finally if you weren’t a designer , What would you be instead?

If I wasn’t a designer I would

Probably had been an archaeologist
