Chinoiserie Bedroom Designs

Chinoiserie pronounced Sheen-Waa-Zuh-Ree

Chinoiserie is an art style that became popular in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries, inspired by Chinese and East Asian designs. The word "chinoiserie" comes from the French word for "Chinese." Europeans were fascinated by the exotic look of Chinese art and wanted to incorporate its elements into their own creations.

This style can be seen in paintings, architecture, pottery, and interior design, featuring motifs like dragons, pagodas, flowers, and Chinese landscapes. It was especially popular among royalty and the wealthy, who used it to decorate their homes and objects, making tea drinking a fashionable and stylish activity with elaborate tea sets and furniture.

Chinoiserie is a blend of Eastern and Western art, showing how cultures can influence each other and create new, unique styles.

So how can you recreate this style in your own home?

Using chinoiserie to decorate a bedroom can create an elegant and exotic atmosphere. Here are some steps to incorporate this style:

1. Wall Treatments:

Wallpaper: Choose chinoiserie wallpaper with traditional motifs like birds, flowers, and landscapes. For a subtler look, consider a mural or a feature wall.

2. Furniture:

- Bed Frame: Select a bed with intricate carvings or a lacquered finish that echoes Chinese designs.

- Nightstands and Dressers: Look for pieces with oriental patterns or embellishments, such as brass hardware or hand-painted details.

3. Textiles:

- Bedding: Use bed linens with chinoiserie patterns, like floral or bird designs, in luxurious fabrics.

- Curtains and Cushions: Choose fabrics that complement the wallpaper and bedding, incorporating similar motifs and colours .

4. Decorative Elements:

- Artwork: Hang framed chinoiserie prints or paintings featuring traditional scenes. Or off cuts of wallpaper framed

- Lamps and Lighting: Use lamps with oriental bases, such as ceramic or porcelain, and shades with chinoiserie patterns.

- Accessories: Include decorative items like vases, ginger jars, and screens with Chinese inspired designs.

5. Flooring:

- Rugs: Select a rug with a chinoiserie pattern or one that features complementary colours and designs.

6. Greenery:

- Add potted plants or bonsai trees to bring in natural elements that enhance the overall theme.

By combining these elements, you can create a bedroom that captures the timeless elegance and exotic charm of chinoiserie.
